Description
Fine art photograph capturing petroglyphs on the Rochester Creek rock art panel above the junction of Rochester Creek and the Muddy River ,near Emery, Utah. Many of the anthropomorphic and zoomorphic images depicted in the panel have been attributed to the Fremont Culture however they are stylistically distinct from other Fremont panels throughout Utah and do share many characteristics of some other enigmatic panels hidden in remote locations within a broad radius of the Rochester panel. It is apparent by the degree of desert varnish that images were added here over a long period of time and quite possibly by more than one culture.
There is evidence that this panel is a complex archaeoastronomy site, serving as a solar calendar. Shadowplay falling on this panel from a tall boulder that acted as a gnomon accurately marks the dates of solstices, the equinox and the cross-quarter dates as the respective shadows fall on glyphs along and above the vertical line to the left of the "rainbow".
