Description
Fine art photograph of ancient Barrier Canyon style pictographs painted on a cliff face in Horseshoe Canyon, Utah.
Little is known about this prehistoric American culture but archaeologists and anthropologists theorize that their "art" is associated with shamanism and magicoreligious traditions. Recurring themes have been interpreted as death and shamanic spirit transmogrification. There are often small beings around the central anthropomorphic figure, which are thought to be spirit helpers.
Universal entoptic symbols are also liberally represented in Barrier Canyon panels. These people were nomadic hunter-gatherers that predate the Basketmaker period but whether they were the ancestors of Anasazi or Fremont people, or any other culture has yet to be proven. Clearly, their stylistic art is unique and easily recognizable.
