Description
Detailed photograph of the Rochester Creek petroglyph panel above the junction of Rochester Creek and the Muddy River near Emery, Utah. Many of the anthropomorphic and zoomorphic images depicted in the panel have been attributed to the Fremont Culture, however they are stylistically distinct from other Fremont panels throughout Utah, though they do share characteristics of other enigmatic panels hidden in remote locations within a broad radius of the Rochester panel. It's apparent by the degree of desert patina that images were added here over a long period of time, and quite possibly by more than one culture.
There is evidence that suggests this panel may be part of a complex archaeoastronomy site that serves as a solar calendar. Shadow play falling on this panel from a tall boulder acting as a gnomon accurately marks the dates of solstices, equinoxes and cross-quarter dates as the respective shadows fall on glyphs along and above the vertical line to the left of the "rainbow".
