Description
Wildlife portrait of an adult Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis, ardea ibis) sporting orange breeding plumage. This striking little heron is perched high in the boughs of a redwood tree that supports a large multi-species heron rookery in Northern California.
Unlike their heron relatives whose main diet is aquatic prey, Cattle Egrets are primarily insectivores who’ve adapted to feeding terrestrially near large herd animals that disturb prey as they move. Western Cattle Egrets were first sighted in North America in 1941. Though they’ve expanded naturally to many parts of the world from their native Spain, Portugal and Africa, they’ve also been introduced by humans who imported them as a benefit to ranchers to provide biological control of domestic herd parasites such as ticks and flies.
