Description
Fine art desert southwest landscape photograph capturing the mysterious pre-Columbian ruins of Hovenweep Castle on El Cajon Mesa in Hovenweep National Monument.
Low winter sunlight imbues the walls of these masonry structures with a rich russet glow that contrasts beautifully against the periwinkle blue of a sky fluffed with puffy cumulus clouds.
These Anasazi masonry structures, and many other archaeological ruins scattered across Cajon Mesa, were constructed by the ancestral Puebloans around 900 A.D.
There is compelling evidence to suggest that ports in several of the towers were purposely sited to serve as astronomical observatories that marked each solstice and equinox. Since the ancestral Puebloans who built these structures were sedentary farmers, it was imperative for them to track astronomical movements though the construction of precise solar calendars that marked seasonal changes.
