Description
Dramatic desert landscape photograph showcasing the reddish-orange masonry walls of Hovenweep Castle. These Anasazi ruins, constructed around 900 A.D., are located on Cajon Mesa among the Square Tower Group, along the rim of Little Ruin Canyon in Hovenweep National Monument.
There is compelling evidence to suggest that ports in several of the towers were purposely sited to serve as solar observatories, marking each solstice and equinox. Since the ancestral Puebloans who built these structures were sedentary farmers, it was important for them to construct a precise calendar to mark the seasonal changes.
