It was still full dark when I brought my coffee outside to revel in the cries of pileated woodpeckers and peregrine falcons competing with a horde of raucous sea lions barking on the islands below.
A streak of magenta along the southern coast heralded the first hint of what was to come. The colors bloomed and spread slowly until the clouds glowed like embers.
I captured this sunrise from the front yard of a home on my great-grandfather’s homestead. Whenever I’m there, I feel a direct connection to ancestors who were blessed with many magical mornings right here.
