Description
Built above Horseshoe Cove at Stewarts Point around 1860, this one-room Greek Revival schoolhouse with its cupola, gablets, pediments and fern-covered portico is typical of the architecture of late 19th and early 20th Century schoolhouses that once were a common sight along the Northern California coast.
Weathering, fire and vandalism have taken their toll on these historic little schools so there are very few examples still in good repair today. The roof has since collapsed on the Stewarts Point School. The one-room schoolhouse that served generations of local families for 97 years, until its closure in 1957, is truly a ruin.
