This iconic Highland cow, sporting cool bangs, shaggy red hair and impressive horns, looks right at home among her fold in a pasture above the Pacific Ocean south of Mendocino, California. This sweet girl, with grass on her tongue, paused her grazing to come over for a visit.
Her Scottish ancestry dates way back before the first written mention of the breed in the 6th Century. Highland cattle are also the oldest registered breed of cattle in the world. They are thought to be descended from longhorn cattle imported to Britain by Neolithic farmers around 2,000 B.C., and they’ve adapted beautifully to domestication over the centuries.
