Artist's Description
Fine art photograph capturing the architectural ruins of La Purisma Concepcion de Quarai church. It is one of three Spanish missions in New Mexico’s Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument complex. Located along the historic Salt Missions Trail, the mission was founded in 1627 on the grounds of Quarai Pueblo. La Purisma Concepcion de Quarai was constructed with Indian labor and included a square kiva within. Prior to subjugation and forced conversion by Spanish invaders, the native population conducted ceremonies in pueblo kivas.
By the 1630s, Quarai had become New Mexico’s seat of the Spanish Inquisition. After decades of Catholic occupation, the native residents of Quarai made plans to revolt but before they could, the Spaniards found out and executed their leader. In the following years, many of the native residents fled the pueblo to live in nearby pueblos. By 1672, Quarai was abandoned forever by the Indians.

About Kathleen Bishop
I'm a native coastal Californian transplanted to the foothills of the Cascades. Being near the mountains has afforded me the opportunity to become attuned to seasonal rhythms and infuse that sense of time and place into my nature photography. I love to take off on roads less traveled, especially when it means losing myself in some remote place until I feel like being found. My portfolio includes natural landscapes, wildlife portraits, botanical macros, vintage architecture, cool geological formations, ranch life and a sprinkling of eccentric oddities that captured my imagination. I invite you to take a moment to peruse my galleries and follow me on Twitter: @EclecticImages. I hope you'll find something that makes you smile! .
