An adult Green Heron (Butorides virescens) in bright breeding plumage stalks prey from atop a rock along the shallow waters of a lakeshore in the high desert of northeastern California. These solitary and territorial little herons can remain perfectly motionless for long periods of time as they wait for their meal to come within striking range.
