Description
Fine art wildlife photograph of a fledgling Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax hoactli) sharing its roost in a coastal redwood tree with an adult Great White Heron, or Great Egret (Ardea alba). The little night heron has recently left the nest in a large heron rookery to practice flying to nearby trees. The adult white egret is taking a break from tending its nest in the crown of the redwood tree. The night heron chick is still cloaked in camo-speckled feathers that helps conceal it from predators. As it matures, it will gradually take on the tuxedo plumage of its parents. This nature photograph of different bird species compatibly sharing their habitat was captured in a rookery in western Sonoma County, California. The four species of heron that rear their chicks here share these trees with nesting Bullock's Orioles, sparrows and crows. With all the activity throughout breeding season, this tranquil scene is rather unusual!
