Artist's Description
The innovative Thew Company of Lorain, Ohio, began producing the earliest gasoline-powered shovels, beginning in 1914. This big old rusty Thew Power Shovel was brought to Mono Lake in 1918 for an ill-fated project to dig a 30-mile irrigation canal to transport water from Rush Creek. The genius engineers who oversaw the project didn’t take into account the porous sediments, so it was only after digging 7.5 miles of canal that they realized all the water leached out within the first 2 miles! Sorry, but I think that’s hilarious. Duh.
This gargantuan, and rather cool, example of engineering innovation has come to rest near a 1935 Chevy dump truck in the town of Lee Vining, California, where it will dig no more.

About Kathleen Bishop
I'm a native coastal Californian transplanted to the foothills of the Cascades. Being near the mountains has afforded me the opportunity to become attuned to seasonal rhythms and infuse that sense of time and place into my nature photography. I love to take off on roads less traveled, especially when it means losing myself in some remote place until I feel like being found. My portfolio includes natural landscapes, wildlife portraits, botanical macros, vintage architecture, cool geological formations, ranch life and a sprinkling of eccentric oddities that captured my imagination. I invite you to take a moment to peruse my galleries and follow me on Twitter: @EclecticImages. I hope you'll find something that makes you smile! .
