Fine art photograph of a bristlecone pine tree. Sundown colors on the twisted skeleton of an ancient bristlecone pine tree (Pinus longaeva) in the White Mountains of eastern California.
Bristlecone pines have not only adapted to, but thrive in, shallow, dry dolomitic soils that are high in alkaline and low in phosphorus, which excludes many other plant species.
The bristlecone groves in the White Mountains also endure extreme cold and arid conditions, slowing their growth rate. Even after death, their wood remains extremely tough and dense, weathering like stone rather than rotting away like other species of pine. Bristlecones are among the oldest known individual living organisms. A neighboring bristlecone on this mountain peak is said to be 5,064 years old.

I'm a native coastal Californian transplanted to the foothills of the Cascades. Being near the mountains has afforded me the opportunity to become attuned to seasonal rhythms and infuse that sense of time and place into my nature photography. I love to take off on roads less traveled, especially when it means losing myself in some remote place until I feel like being found. My portfolio includes natural landscapes, wildlife portraits, botanical macros, vintage architecture, cool geological formations, ranch life and a sprinkling of eccentric oddities that captured my imagination. I invite you to take a moment to peruse my galleries and follow me on Twitter: @EclecticImages. I hope you'll find something that makes you smile! .
