Description
Fine art botanical macro photograph capturing the fiery blossoms of a rare species of wild Indian Paintbrush. This close-up photograph of red and orange Mendocino Coast Paintbrush (Castilleja mendocinensis) flowers was captured on the edge of a wind-battered coastal prairie high above the Pacific Ocean in Mendocino County, California.
Castilleja mendocinensis is endemic to California and, as its common name implies, Mendocino Coast Paintbrush is quite at home in this challenging environment, blazing in colorful swaths between the ocean bluffs and pine forests, where it never fails to brighten coastal landscapes in the spring.
The red and orange flowers captured in this macro photo are nestled in the warm sunshine among rattlesnake grass (Briza maxima), English plantain (Plantago lanceolate) and sheep’s sorrel (Rumex acetosa). If you look closely, you can see a host of tiny insects picking their way through the glistening, sticky hairs on the bracts.
