Description
Fine art wildlife photograph of a Tule Elk bull (Cervus canadensis nannodes), or Wapiti, lounging atop a hill in Pt. Reyes, overlooking the blue waters of Tomales Bay. Tule elk are endemic to California and before local extirpation due to unregulated hunting, they ranged from the grasslands and marshlands of the Central Valley to the California coast. By 1870, they were thought to be extinct but a small remnant population was discovered feeding in tule marshes on a cattle ranch in the Central Valley. The ranch owner, Henry Miller, was instrumental in protecting those elk during his lifetime but after his death, hunting resumed and the population swiftly declined. Owing to subsequent conservation efforts, there are an estimated 3,900 tule elk in 22 herds across California, as of 2012. Fine art prints available for sale. ŠKathleen Bishop.
