This species of raptor, among my all-time favorite hawks, was nearly wiped out due to human depredation in the 30’s and 40’s. From a purely selfish standpoint, I can’t imagine a world devoid of these elegant hawks who skim, soar and kite over marshes and grasslands.
I’d been enjoying the aerobatics of this beauty and its mate as they swept gracefully across a coastal prairie, occasionally calling to each other. When it soared in my direction to settle on a nearby branch it tickled me to know that it wasn’t spooked by this human.
