Description
A striking blonde woman wearing a mustard-yellow sundress with white flowers and dark high heeled shoes that match her sunglasses, clutches a cell phone and water bottle as she stands profiled in the doorway of the historic El Potrero Trading Post in Chimayó, New Mexico.
Also known as the Vigil Store, it was opened in 1921 as a grocery store by Alfonsa Vigil to serve the community of El Potrero. It is still family owned and her descendants operate the store, offering crafts by New Mexican artists, and containers in which to place “sacred dirt” dug from El Santuario de Chimayó, a famous Catholic shine within easy walking distance of the store.
Above the corrugated roof covering the porch, strings of dark red chili ristras hang from weathered roof beams, framing El Potrero Trading Post and Vigil Store signs. Touches of colorful and eclectic Northern New Mexico are detailed throughout this classic scene, capturing the convergence of old time New Mexican village culture and yuppified offerings to lure Anglo pilgrims.
