Description
A pair of turkey vultures (Cathartes aura meridionalis) soak up the morning sun above the Pacific Ocean in Mendocino County, California. Buzzards spread their wings because it creates more surface area to absorb the sun’s rays, and it has the added benefit of baking bacteria off their wings.
The buzzard on the right may have spread its wings to bask in the sun but I think he may just be playing peek-a-boo!
