Description
Fine art nature photograph of a sulphur polypore (Laetiporus sulphureus) attached to the bole of a majestic Blue Oak. This parasitic fungus is considered edible when it is young. One of its common names is "Chicken of the Woods" because when it is sautéed, it does taste like chicken. This parasitic saprophyte causes brown cubical rot in the heartwood of trees on which it grows. During a subsequent visit I saw that it had been removed before it caused permanent damage to the oak.
