Description
High tides toss a colorful treasure trove of tiny seashells roiled among pebbles on a secret beach along the rugged Mendocino Coast in Northern California.
As a child, I spent some of my happiest hours here on my Grandpa’s private beach, sifting through hundreds of tiny, perfect sea shells deposited during winter storms. A bulwark of boulders protects them from rolling back to sea, so thousands of Pacific Coast seashells have formed a cache several feet deep in a tiny, isolated pocket tucked away from public view. Because access to this beach is well-guarded from the hordes of greedy abalone poachers who strip reefs clean as a moonscape, the tide pools here are still pristine habitat for a myriad of sea creatures.
Access to this spot entails a long hike to the edge of an extremely unstable cliff. One has to grab for a hand-over-hand rope dangling over the edge. It is tied to an overhanging cypress branch that whips in the constant onshore winds. Shinning down the cliff dislodges rocks that cascade and bounce down the dizzying cliff. That element of risk adds to the thrill I always feel when I have the privilege to revisit one of my forever favorite places on Earth.
