Description
Macro photograph of a cluster of Red-humped Caterpillars (Schizura concinna) feasting on the leaves of a wild Western Redbud (Cercis occidentalis) in my yard. These colorful caterpillars turn into drab little moths.
There are several wild redbuds on my property but every spring when the new leaves emerge, a new crop of Red-humped Caterpillars always choose this tree to feed. Hundreds of them frantically strip leaves until the tree looks ragged but the damage they cause never does permanent harm. Each year, that redbud tree grows taller and stronger.
