Description
Fine art nature photograph of a large, healthy raven (Corvus corax) perched on a picket while dining on the meat of some hapless passerine. A member of the Corvid family related to crows, jays, magpies and nutcrackers, this raven and its mate have taken up residence on a weather-beaten peninsula on the western coast of North America in Northern California.
This pair has successfully reared generations of chicks over the years who have established their own territories along the coast. Ravens are extremely territorial and will ferociously defend their airspace by harassing and driving away bald eagles and other raptors who dare infringe on their hunting grounds.
Ravens possess the advanced intelligence necessary to adapt their behavior to thrive for many years within the changing dynamics of the harsh environment along the edge of the Pacific Ocean where they have chosen to spend their lives. I've observed the behaviors of this pair at different seasons throughout the years and am always struck by their keen perception and their ability to use reason to make clever choices that have ensured their survival. It's been interesting to observe their concerted teamwork and dedication, while supporting their hatchlings until they have grown into full-fledged adults.
