Description
Notable in this photograph are the architectural lines of the massive sandstone ruins of La Purisma Concepcion de Quarai church. It's one of three Spanish missions in New Mexico’s Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument complex. Located along the historic Salt Missions Trail, the mission was founded in 1627 on the grounds of Quarai Pueblo. La Purisma Concepcion de Quarai was constructed with Indian labor and included a square kiva within. Prior to subjugation and forced conversion by Spanish invaders, the native population conducted ceremonies in their pueblo kivas.
By the 1630s, Quarai had become New Mexico’s seat of the Spanish Inquisition. After decades of Catholic occupation and subjugation, the Native American residents of Quarai made plans to revolt but before they could, the Spaniards found out and executed their leader. In the following years, many of the native people fled Quarai to live in nearby pueblos. By 1672, Quarai was abandoned forever by the indigenous people.
