Description
Architectural photograph of sunlight and shadows playing on the walls of El Misión Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Cuarac ruins, at Quarai Pueblo in Northern New Mexico. Though wispy clouds in a brilliant blue sky sing of purity and innocence, the tops of the imposing stone walls seem to converge, as if leaning closer to whisper the secrets of their dark past.
After subjugation by Spanish invaders, the Native population of Quarai Pueblo was conscripted to build this massive Catholic edifice which also served as the ecclesiastical headquarters for the Spanish Inquisition in New Mexico. By 1672, all of the native residents at Quarai Pueblo fled, never to return.
