Description
Fine art wild life photograph capturing a darling little Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) and his rippling reflection as he paddles a pond with an American Coot (Fulica americana). Winter-ragged cattail reflections ripple ribbon reflections of gold and forest green, snaking through the robin's egg blue of the morning sky mirrored by the water.
Pied-billed grebes are quite shy and quickly dive when feeling threatened. They also dive to catch their prey, which typically include aquatic invertebrates, small fish and amphibians. Since the demise of the Atitlán grebe (declared extinct by 1990), pied-billed grebes are the only surviving member of the genus Podilymbus.
Though these birds are tiny compared to many other water birds, their call is not. Echoing across the water, they belt out a cacophony of discordant notes that belie their fuzzy, endearing charms. Instead, their call conjures images of hidden evil lurking in primordial swamps.
