Artist's Description

Fine art landscape photograph capturing a newborn Holstein bull calf being cared for by its devoted mama. This iconic photograph typifies life on an historic dairy cattle ranch in Marin County's Point Reyes National Seashore. These wind-blown coastal prairies above the brilliant blue Pacific in Northern California have been home to dairy ranches since the early 1,800's. These pastures produce abundant grass and forbs over a long season, thanks to the management practices employed by Coastal Miwok and other native peoples over the millennia.

Holstein-Friesian cattle, recognizable for their distinctive black and white color patterns, began being selectively bred around 2,000 years ago by European tribesmen using the black cows of the Batavians and white cows of Friesians. Through later genetic improvement through artificial insemination, the Holstein is now the world's dominant milk producing breed.
