Description
Convergent lady beetles (Hippodamia convergens) cluster ing on the trunk of an alder tree in winter. Winters are rough up in these mountains; freezing temps with snow piled high, but these ladybugs cluster together by the thousands on trees and boulders along the creek until spring arrives. When the weather warms, they leave their refuge and fly downstream in thick waves as they begin their search for food. Their exodus from the high country is a true harbinger of spring.
