Description
A Columbian black-tailed stag deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus), sporting a velvety rack of antlers, munches happily on shrubbery in my sunny yard as if it’s his private all-you-can-eat buffet. Jethro and his twin brother Jed were born in the woods nearby and have been raiding my gardens since they were spotted fawns. They seem to think I’m just another member of the herd and always look befuddled when I try to shoo them away.
Wading through a sea of variegated Painter’s Palette (Tovara virginiana), Jethro has passed on the bright yellow leaves of an Aucuba japonica to browse a Loropetalum, which is odd since deer have never touched my Loropetalum before. But there are no deer-proof plants, just as there are no plants that the resident band of wild turkeys won’t destroy.
