Description
Fine art photograph of a larger-than-life-size male anthropomorphic petroglyph concealed in the entrance of a secret passageway hidden within the rim rock of a northern Utah mountain. The upper part of his head is gone and it is difficult to see whether it was once there. From far below, the talus appears to be capped with an impenetrable wall of vertical slickrock stretching to the top of the mesa. A very narrow crack in the cliff wall provides a steep stairway to the top but one must squeeze between this imposing male and his female counterpart who is carved into the opposite wall. There is speculation that this glyph is a prehistoric calendar that served the hunters who camped in the area. Elk herds still migrate through this country and at least one other prehistoric calendar nearby still marks the time of the elks’ annual passage. In any case, this access to the top of the mountain could have been easily defended against anyone who was brave enough to venture past the guardians. Fine art prints available for sale. ©Kathleen Bishop.
