Description
Fine art wildlife photograph capturing a beautiful green heron (Butorides virescens anthonyi) and its reflection as it fishes from a log on the edge of a wetlands marsh in northern California. Herons can remain motionless for a very long time while they wait for prey to come within striking distance. Green herons are one of the few species that utilize tools when fishing. They are known to gather insects, twigs and feathers and drop them on the water to lure aquatic prey close enough for a strike. This beautiful young male heron is a solitary hunter. Many heron species nest in large colonies, but green herons nest alone, next to, or above water. ŠKathleen Bishop 2014.
