Description
Fine art desert southwest landscape photograph capturing the colorfully-banded Gingham Skirts Butte on the Paria Plateau in the Grand Staircase-Escalante Wilderness of southern Utah. Rainbow ribbons heaped tall and capped with crenellated Navajo sandstone are flooded with late afternoon sunlight beneath a sky blackened by storm clouds. This amazing geology is part of the Triassic Period Petrified Forest Member of the Chinle formation. The banded colors were laid down as volcanic ash that converted to bentonite. A huge chunk of broken rim rock has rolled down the mountain and come to rest on the desert floor, providing a sense of scale.
