Description
Fine art wildlife photography capturing a trio of baby Great White Herons, AKA Great Egrets (Ardea alba) in their nest in the crest of a cottonwood tree. These comical-looking heron chicks are at that awkward stage, all beak and pin feathers. One of their parents stands above them, either taking a break from hunting crustaceans and small fish in the stream beneath their nest or it's there to guard from aerial predators. A resident red-tailed hawk routinely patrols the rookery, looking for vulnerable babies to snatch. Both egret parents share incubating, brooding and feeding their family until the juvenile birds are able to fly and hunt for food.
One of these adorable baby egrets thinks it's feeding time now and seems to be beseeching its parent to deliver a meal. This nature photograph of a wild Great Egret family in their nest was captured in a mixed water bird rookery in Butte County, California.
