Description
The veined petals of a beautiful wild Douglas Iris (Iris douglasiana) provide the perfect hunting ground for a crab spider (Misumena vatia). Crab, or flower spiders, have the uncanny ability to change their coloring to match the colors of the flowers where they hunt insects.
Scientists who've studied their camouflaging behavior are puzzled about the reason for this adaptation. Their studies have shown that camouflaged crab spiders do not catch insects at a higher rate than crab spiders who didn't change their outfit to match the flower, nor are camouflaged spiders any less likely to be eaten by predators.
If you look closely, you can see a bumblebee sheltering beneath another petal.
