Description
Fine art wildlife photograph of Tule Elk bulls (Cervus canadensis nannodes), or Wapiti, grazing the coastal prairie on Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County, California.
Tule elk are endemic to California and before extirpation due to hunting, they ranged from the grasslands and marshlands of the Central Valley to the California coast. By 1870, they were thought to be extinct but a small remnant population was discovered feeding in tule marshes on a cattle ranch in California's Central Valley. Owing to subsequent conservation efforts, there are now a few thousand Tule elk in California.
