Description
Fine art wildlife photograph featuring a pair of Bufflehead Ducks (Bucephala albeola) swimming together on Manzanita Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California. The drake's iridescent feathers flash in the sun while his mate's colors are more subdued. In winter, these sea ducks are often found along rivers, ponds and harbors near the coast but in summer they venture inland to their nesting grounds. This female bufflehead will soon be nesting in a tree cavity near Manzanita Lake. They are particularly fond of using abandoned woodpecker nests. Buffleheads are monogamous and return to the same breeding grounds each year to nest and rear their ducklings. Fine art prints available for sale. ŠKathleen Bishop 2014.
