Description
Rows of colorful and dusty antique glass and porcelain insulators decorate the shelves of a tall window framed by weather-warped casements in a building in the mountains of northern New Mexico.
Because of their non-conductive surface, glass insulators came into use in the 1850’s to insulate telegraph lines from the wooden poles. As technology evolved, glass and porcelain insulators continued to be used to insulate telephone and power lines. In their heyday, they were manufactured by the millions in a rainbow of colors and styles. Some are still in use today, more commonly spotted on poles along rail tracks or beside roads out in the boonies.
